Providers from referral facilities that serve American Indian or Alaska Native victims of sexual abuse are also eligible to attend at no cost. This is a 40-hour, self paced online course. Once it begins, you may view the course at any time of the day or night. Professional Requirements: You must hold an active, unrestricted license as an RN, Advanced Practice RN, MD, DO, or PA to take this course. This course is intended for practitioners who will be performing hands-on Medical Forensic Exams. System Requirements: Desktop or Laptop Computer with updated operating system. High Speed Internet is recommended. Additionally, you will need access to YouTube and a PDF Reader like Adobe Reader. Target Audience:
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, physicians, and physician assistants involved in the treatment and care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Statement of Need/Program Overview:
Clinicians evaluating patients who have experienced sexual assault often fail to recognize the importance of comprehensive medical treatment and evaluation of the patient, which is included in the medical forensic examination. They lack basic training in performing the medical forensic evaluation of the patient, and are unable to provide the services or the care necessary to prevent long term health sequelae in the aftermath of sexual violence. Current peer reviewed literature indicates that to provide the best outcomes for the patient in terms of their health and well-being, a provider needs specialized education and training in the care of this patient population. This online training will provide clinical information, along with the cultural and historical information necessary for completing a medical forensic evaluation on the American Indian/Alaska Native populations that Indian Health Services provide services to.
